I have to admit….I hate French Toast. The idea of soggy bread freaks me out. I want to like it. My family likes it and I make it often just for them. That said, there are exactly 2 times in my life when I tried French Toast and loved it. The first was at the restaurant in South Florida called The Ark, where my family used to go on special occasions back in the day. And the second time was in Baltimore, MD at a cafe called The Blue Moon Cafe. I spent so much time thinking back to what set those two recipes a part from all the other times, and the answer is……..crunchy cereal coating. The Ark coated their French Toast in crushed corn flakes and The Blue Moon coated theirs in Captain Crunch cereal. So here’s my version of the only French Toast I will eat and thus in my opinion, the BEST French Toast ever!
The BEST Air Fryer Captain Crunch French Toast
Recipe by Lana Horruitiner-Perez based on The Blue Moon Cafe and The Ark Restaraunt
- 6 slices of thick bread like Challah
Dredge:
- 3 Eggs
- 2 Tbl Sugar
- 1/2 cup Heavy Cream (you can use Milk if you don’t have heavy cream)
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
Batter:
- 2 cups Captain Crunch Cereal
Place 2 cups Captain Crunch cereal in a Ziploc bag, pushing as much air out as possible.
Using a rolling pin (or whatever you have) and crush the cereal until it’s very small pieces. Place in a pie pan or flat container. Set aside.
In a small bowl, whisk together 3 Eggs, 2 Tbl Sugar, 1/2 cup Heavy Cream, 1 tsp Vanilla, and 1/2 tsp Cinnamon. Set aside.
Pour a small amount of the Egg mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Place 4 – 6 pieces of Challah Bread into the pan and then pour the rest of the Egg mixture over the bread allowing it to soak for 2-5 mins. (if you are using thinner bread, don’t let it soak too much)
Direction for Omni/Omni Plus
Place the slotted baking tray in the middle position and the black baking tray on the very bottom position. Press the “AIR FRY” button on Omni/Omni Plus and set the temp to 345 degrees F and the time to 10 mins.
Directions for Vortex Plus
Place the drip tray on the bottom of the oven. Press the “Air Fry” button on the Vortex and set the temp to 345 degrees F and time to 10 mins.
Take each piece of French Toast and place it in the Captain Crunch mixture and press to adhere the cereal to the bread. Flip and coat the other side. Place the coated bread into the Air Fryer flat basket if using the Omni/Omni Plus or the slotted baking tray for the Vortex. (If you want to cook more than 2 at a time you can place it directly on the tray once the oven is preheated.)
Once the oven in preheated and beeps, place the French Toast in the oven and cook for 6 mins. Then flip each piece and allow to cook another 4 mins.
Serve with Syrup or Powdered Sugar. (If you need to cook more pieces, place the ones that are already done in an oven set to warm.)
Buen Provecho!
